Abstract

This study presents reflections that move from the global to the local, aiming to analyze cordel literature in the Sisal Territory as an expression of popular culture, understanding its contribution to the construction of cultural identity and to the affirmation of the decolonial power of the place. In this perspective, the main theoretical foundations used were the research of Aníbal Quijano (2005), discussing coloniality as a persistent structure of domination; Walter Mignolo (2008), addressing the decolonial option and the critique of Western epistemic hegemony; Enrique Dussel (1993), proposing a philosophy of liberation centered on historically marginalized subjects; Geertz (2008), reflecting on the interpretation of cultures; Freire (1993), addressing popular culture; and Meneses (2019), on cordel as cultural heritage. This is a qualitative, bibliographical research study, based on the interpretation and analysis of previously published theoretical works, prioritizing the understanding of the meanings attributed to the phenomenon under study. Cordel literature is a form of popular knowledge with strong resistance, and therefore, thinking about an education for the popular classes that is liberating and aims to build new horizons is a unique form of protagonism for rural subjects, especially in the Sisal Territory. It is one of the possibilities for promoting a solid and favorable ground, one that has meaning and contributes to a more complete human formation. Furthermore, this research reinforces the potential of the place as a space of significant construction that carries memories and identities that need to be contextualized.
